There are few places that stir the senses like Southeast Asia, at once exotic and familiar, ancient yet modern.
In north Vietnam, 1000-year-old capital Hanoi is the country’s atmospheric seat of politics and learning. Here you can explore ancient temples, crowded markets and an Old Quarter of traditional shophouses selling every imaginable good, from copper pipes and silver jewelry to aromatic herbs and spices.
To the east, Ha Long Bay: a tranquil UNESCO-listed seascape dotted with more than 3,000 limestone karsts where you’ll discover deserted beaches, magnificent caves and hidden lagoons.
In the south, frenetic, freewheeling hub Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC) is a center of innovation and commerce and the gateway to the Mekong Delta – the rice bowl of Southeast Asia. More than 18 million people live here in small villages and vibrant towns along labyrinthine tributaries where fish, rice and produce and tropical fruits are bought and sold from colorful longboats and sampans in the region’s many floating markets.
The Mekong Delta extends into Cambodia, where the ancient Angkorian temple complex in Siem Reap – home to Angkor Wat – is one of the region’s biggest draws.
And if you want to chill on soft swathes of sand, you can do that, too. Vietnam alone has more 2000 miles of coastline and its tropical weather, extensive coral-reef-ringed shores and upscale resorts make this beautiful paradise the perfect place for a beach holiday.
